Thank you so much for interviewing my Prof Rangarajan who taught at University of Pennsylvania and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A). He is not only a brilliant economist he is one of the most humble public servant that I have ever met. He also advised us for many years and we owe him a debt of our gratitude.
I have researched on this topic! Manmohan was the financial advisor for India and never prescribed capitalism.
In year 1990 he was a head of South-south commission ( India and Africas ) and he was prescribing socialism.
He never diagnosed the problem of India
He never prescribed the solution as well.
When India bankrupted and wanted money from IMF, they demanded certain conditions to be met and to implement those conditions PV Rao brought in Manmohan.
And those conditions were to open economy for capitalism…
Gorbachev who ended the USSR and LTTE leader who ended the leader who was carrying the flag off of socialism have contributed the course correction of India indirectly!
If anyone has more information of the IMF official who prescribed capitalism to India, would love to know it!

I have given the facts.
If Manmohan diagnosed license Raj and socialism was the problem, he could have changed course when he was the economic advisor for Indira.
He did the opposite and nationalized the banks.
Absolutely correct Cyrus, MMS is a lifelong bureaucrat who has changed his positions to hold on to positions of power. And it has served him well. But to credit him on being a free market reformer is absolute propaganda.
Raghuram Rajan said, “I'm not the opposition. I like to emphasise that and I'm an academic, and academics have a duty to criticise what? They don't see us working well, both sides, right? So that's what I do. Uh, look, I think we need to figure out how we get the people who are not doing well to actually do better and that will increase growth. Having inclusive growth will actually increase the pace of growth. And I'm not saying we should, you know, tax the wealthy to a huge extent or anything of that sort.”
Best Economist Manmohan Singh has bail out India from economic crises during his tenure Indian Economy growth rate is 11-12 ℅ of GDP Dr. Singh is the greatest economist in the world, we should be proud of him
Truly, he's a remarkable individual. :)
Prof Rangarajan is a great academician, but a total failure as RBI governor, maybe the second worst ever in recent memory, second only to Raghuram rajan. RBI governorship takes a lot of maneuovering in the rough and tumble world of international finance, not the best place for an academician to try to fit in with their pet peeves.

Manmohan Singh during Indira Gandhi days was a strong proponent of socialism and licence raj. He is over hyped. It was the leadership of Late Narsimha Rao that changed the course of the economy. MM Singh was just a spineless stooge
